DIY on the FLY Back-to-School Mead Notebook

DIY on the Fly Back-to-School Mead Notebook Tip of the Week:

Turn your ordinary mead composition notebook into something too cool for school! Here’s how you do it.

1.  Start with a standard composition book

2.  Purchase scrapbook paper from your local craft store.  I love the DCWC sets at Joanne Fabrics that includes four decorative color coordinated scrapbook sheets of paper for $5.99

3.  Next. Use a glue stick and put a nice coat of glue onto the face of notebook.

4.  Align your paper with the bottom edge and the tape of your notebook and press firmly to the glue.  Use extra glue as needed to make sure your edges stay in place.

5.  Trim the excess off using your scissors and following the edge of the notebook.

6.  repeat this step on the back and the inside front and back of your notebook for a complete new look.

7.  Embellish with crystals, ribbon, trim, buttons, stickers any way you like to personalize your notebook with your own unique style.

As you head back to school, have fun being you and feeling really cool.

Traditional wedding gowns are out the window as celebrities and brides opt for comfort, price and a style that’s all their own for their wedding day! Here’s the Trend.  Three and Two piece wedding gowns with removable skirts!  Wear a more formal, long skirt for your walk down the aisle and drop your skirt to reveal  a knee-length dress underneath so you can easily head straight for your reception!  You can also purchase a three-piece ensemble with a bodice, long skirt and then change into a short sassy skirt for your reception.  How fun is that?  Or maybe you want to pair your bodice top with a pair of blue jeans and cowboy boots for a barn or outdoor wedding? Whatever you decide to do just make it your own. Anything goes these days. Dare to be different and shine in your own personal style. After all, it’s your special day, so kick up your heels and hang on for the ride of your life!

Two-piece bridal gown

When it comes to the bridal veil toss it aside and make way for a Royal affair!  Here’s the Trend.  Crowns, tiaras, headbands and jewels!  Everyone is a princess and my friend Renee Pawele of Renee Pawele Bride makes the most decadent jewels and head pieces that I have ever seen! She draws inspiration from the world around her and each individual bride so every piece she designs is unique. There is nothing cookie cutter about her!  With Renee Pawele you are purchasing an heirloom piece that can be worn again after your wedding day as well as handed down to the next generation.  She has made custom pieces for celebrities including the reining Miss USA who wore her custom jewels the evening she was crowned!  You can find Renee once a month at Kleinfields the original Say Yes to the Dress bridal boutique in New York City, at bridal boutique trunk shows around the country or online at  The best part is that her prices are affordable, ranging from $200 to $500 per piece on average.

Just like the trend of tossing aside the Traditional wedding gown we are seeing a trend towards wedding floral decor with a blend of anything that’s out of the ordinary! Really nothing is off-limits for any bride today!  Here’s the Trend. The Pantone color of the year Marsala is big and ordinary Roses are out! It’s all about an eclectic mix with succulents, berries, exotic flowers in rich deep tones paired with pastel blues and soft pink hues.  Interesting containers are also in.  Think outside-the-box when it comes to bridal bouquets, floral centerpieces and boutineers.

Celebrities and brides alike want every little detail from their head to their toes be perfect on their wedding day. That includes your hair, makeup and nails! Here’s the Trend.  Pastel colored nails are walking down the aisle adding a bridal pop of color. I love Superstar Nail Lacquer and its color line!  Ariana Pierce started Superstar Nail Lacquer at the tender age of 17. She was inspired to create a culture for women that would help them to recognize that their nails were just as important as their style. She has over 32 richly formulated nail lacquers designed to make you feel like a celebrity. Super Star Nail Lacquer is chip resistant, long-lasting, quick drying and formaldehyde-free.  You can purchase it online at

DIY on the FLY by Julee Ireland Wedding Favor Place Card

Seating your guests in style sets the tone for the celebration that’s ahead.  Here’s a few double duty DIY ideas for seating place cards that also make great wedding party favors at the same time.

Mini Terrarium

1. Start by purchasing a mini glass container that you like.  I found a few at Michael’s craft stores that I liked.

2. Add gravel, moss or sand depending on the container that you choose.

3.  Purchase floral stems of succulents or other small-scale flower stems that you like.

4.  Add the filler first.  If you are using a container you may want to use a glue gun to secure your gravel or moss to the inside of the glass container.

5.  If you are using the bulb as pictured. Pour some fine grain sand into the bulb filling it to your desired look.

6.  Cut your succulents or small flowers from your stems and depending on the container you use either glue them in place or stuff them into the bulb dropping them down into the sand.  (I used a pencil to help position my succulent stems where I wanted them into my bulb).

7.  Add your place card tag with your guest name or guest name and table number.

Voila!  There are many ways to display your place cards.  I personally love putting them at each place setting in the center of a plate or right above a napkin.  Enjoy your special day and leave your guests with a unique wedding favor gift that will keep on giving.

Home Interiors Styled in the Spirit of Red, White and Blue

The month of July is when we celebrate our country’s independence. Homes across America gather their family and friends for backyard barbeques with a red, white and blue, stars and stripes theme reminiscent of our country’s flag; ending the evening with a bang through a dazzling display of fireworks. I love to decorate with red, white and blue because of its classic, regal historical look and feel. It’s never passé to show your patriotic colors and it’s easier than you think to capture the spirit of Independence Day year around in your home. Here are some simple tips to decorate your home and pay tribute to our red, white and blue flag with style year-round.

The family room is the beating heart of every house. It’s where family and friends culminate to spend time together making it the perfect place to display your patriotic home décor. Create a focal point in your room by painting a wall your favorite shade of red and accent with blue and white. Find a stark white paint for your other walls and incorporate a blue or white sofa, chairs and coffee table that compliments your scheme. Let the red stand out on your wall and bring a few accessories into the room in shades of red through books, flowers, and frames or American flags.

All-American-Kitchens-Red-White-Blue-2While the family room is the beating heart, the kitchen is the pulse to your home. If there’s something cooking there will be someone looking, so this really is one of the most important rooms in your house when it comes to design. We spend a lot of time in our kitchen so you need to love its look, layout and function. I adore a red, white and blue kitchen because of its simple, clean appeal. White cabinets are a must! They can make a small kitchen appear larger and make the space feel open. Try using a solid blue countertop, white subway tile backsplash and add red accents to the room through your lighting, countertop appliances, flowers, dinnerware, or window coverings. Think about using a collection of small flags on wooden dowels in a white vase as a patriotic table centerpiece.

Your guest bath is a really fun place to express personality and create a conversation piece for your guests at the same time. So when it comes to the guest bath I love to think outside the box. Make a patriotic statement with blue pattered walls, stark white trim and red-hot accessories. Consider using wallpaper or fabric in a classic toile or pattern colored in red, white and blue. Use a contrasting color from the main color on your walls to paint your trim a bold color of red or blue. Or keep your walls a stark white or hue of blue and add a bold punch of red through your lighting, sink or toilet.

When it comes to decorating a bedroom it doesn’t have to be all stars and stripes. Try using checker and dot patterns of red, white and blue to bring a charming and whimsical patriotic feel to your space. American country antiques, hooked rugs or classic red, white and blue quilts look stunning and are all timeless depictions of our countries history. Consider repurposing old furniture pieces to make them new again by adding a patriotic touch painting them in rich hues of red or blue. Remember that lighting is the jewelry to your home and this is also an important way to incorporate red, white and blue into your room.

Shelf-CompleteAccessorizing each room in your home is the glue that ties your design together. It’s not something that you can do overnight but it’s important and fun to collect the right pieces a little bit at a time. Here’s one fun idea to think about in your search for household accessories to tie in nicely with a red, white and blue American theme. Collect flags for different eras and display them throughout your home as wall hangings or use them to make pillows or blankets with flag inspired motifs. This is something that the whole family can enjoy collecting together as you shop or travel. Just think you will be creating your own historical American museum in your home that can be passed down for generations to come.

Enjoy celebrating our Country’s Independence Day with your family and friends but most importantly, enjoy capturing the style and spirit of our freedom year-round in your home.

DIY on the FLy™- July 4th Decorating Ideas

Happy Independence Day! This is one of my favorite holidays because it’s summertime, the backyard BBQ’s are fabulous and it’s the day when our nation proudly displays the red, white and blue colors of our American flag to honor our freedom.  The firework displays are kind of fun too!  I wanted to share with you a few simple, last minute and inexpensive DIY on the FLY™ ideas to make your own backyard BBQ or party festive and memorable for you and your guests.

A Starry Lawnscape

Want to wow your guests and excite the kids? Create a starry lawn scene with a simple cardboard template and a little spray paint.

1.  Use an old cardboard box your pencil and ruler to draw a star.  You can make several in different sizes. Don’t worry about making perfect stars. Perfection is in the imperfection!

2.  Use your scissors or a box cutter to cut the center out of each star giving you a finished template.

3.  Lay your template flat on your lawn positioned where you want it. Next take your spray paint and spray paint the inside of the template your desired color of Red, White or Blue.

4.  Scatter your stars mixing sizes and colors to create a fun landscape and conversation piece for your party!

Mason Jar, Handkerchief and Silverware Service

Here is a simple, fun, festive way to serve a cup, silverware and napkin all in one that won’t break the bank!

1. Use old mason or glass jars left over from canned goods or purchase new ones.  You can find them at Michael’s craft stores, Target or Bed Bath and Beyond

2.  Next you will need some red, white and blue handkerchiefs which you can also find at Michael’s craft store, Joanne fabrics or online.

3.  Take your plastic or metal silverware and put it on a handkerchief and stuff inside the glass.

4.  You can display them on trays in the center of a table, or put several down the center of long tables or at the end of your food display. Get creative and have fun with it!

Handkerchief Table Cloth or Runner

This is such a fun and simple tablecloth or table runner to make! The best part is it can be used year-round for all your backyard parties or BBQ’s!

1.  Purchase red, white and blue handkerchief’s from your local craft or fabric store.

2.  Measure the length of your table to figure out how many squares you will need to give you at least a 6″ to 8″ drop around your table.

3.  Sew the squares together with a 1/4″ seam allowance. If you do not know how to sew you can always use fabric glue with a 1/4″ overlap. (If you decide to use fabric glue, be sure to allow for proper drying time.)

4.  Display your new table cloth or table runner proudly!

Now that you have the perfect Red, White and Blue Backyard BBQ and Party theme; sit back and celebrate your family, friends, fireworks and most importantly, how blessed we all are to be free and to live in this great country.

God Bless America!

With June gloom just around the corner, did you know that decorative accent pillows are the easiest way to change up and revive a tired room? It’s true, just by adding a new bright and cheerful color or pattern to your room you can turn June gloom into a beautiful bloom.

As an artist, I love to paint with watercolor, mostly because of the daring dance and musical melody the melding of color play on a canvas.  To me, it’s the perfection in the imperfection™ that I adore so much.  It’s that magic that takes place when blending multi-dimensional layers of color and how they all seen to culminate together so brilliantly in the end that always amazes me.  So, with watercolor on my mind, I thought I would share with you a simple, DIY on the Fly™ under $25 project that incorporates a watercolor finish with a pillow to create a refreshing new look for your room; Decorative Watercolor Accent Pillows. DIY on the Fly™- Dip-Dyed Stationery

Handmade Dip-Dyed Stationery

As the owner of my own greeting card company to say I am passionate about paper and people is an understatement! There is nothing more sentimental in this day and age of technology than that of a hand written note. I believe everyone needs a personal set of stationery and handmade stationery for mom will make her think of you each time she sends a note. This is a simple, fun project that the whole family can enjoy and it also makes a great gift for teachers or other important people in your life.

Step One:

Find some plain white, uncoated stationery, envelopes or gift tags from your local craft or paper store.

Step Two:

Using a plastic cup or Tupperware dish fill it with hot water and your desired color of Rit liquid dye. Let the solution cool before dipping your stationery or envelope.

Step Three:

Carefully dip the paper about an inch into the solution until you have your desired color. Don’t worry about creating a straight line. Perfection is in the imperfection. Each piece is unique and that’s the true beauty of this project!

Step Four:

Lastly, you will want to hang your paper to dry before you package it together and embellish it with a beautiful decorative ribbon and a handwritten gift note.
